HOW WE HELP

Emotional Assistance to Families

Childhood cancer causes serious emotional stress and anxiety for patients, parents, siblings, and extended family members. Emotional support is critical to help the ill child and the family as they face these tremendous strains. The Tomorrow Fund’s provides funding for:

  • Pediatric Oncology Social Workers – These trained professionals meet with each child and family during outpatient Clinic visits and inpatient hospital stays to help families cope with the daily emotional and financial challenges of childhood cancer.

  • Parent Consultants – Compassionate individuals who have personally experienced the trauma of having a child with cancer, our Parent Consultants provide both practical assistance and emotional support from the perspective of one who has “been there.”

  • Child Life Specialist – Through therapeutic play, distraction therapies, and other age-appropriate activities, our Child Life Specialist creates a welcoming and nurturing environment in The Tomorrow Fund Clinic, putting children at ease and helping to alleviate the anxiety and stress associated with illness and hospitalization.

  • The Clinic Play Lady - Arts and crafts activities supervised by the Play Lady keep patients and siblings actively involved as they await test results or during outpatient chemotherapy.

  • Camp Dotty – A highlight of the year, this week-long summer day camp for 3-7 years old children with cancer and their siblings offers a fun, "no-pain" hospital experience for kids and a welcome respite for parents.

  • Support Groups – led by professionals, Support Groups provide a safe and nurturing atmosphere in which patients and family members can express and explore their feelings and experiences. Current Groups include: Kid 2 Kid (for school-age children), Teen Group, Parents Coping Group, Parents of Teens Group, and Bereavement Group.
