The Tomorrow Fund Clinic offers a unique and interactive atmosphere
where children are engaged in a world beyond cancer.
The dream of having a local Clinic dedicated solely to the treatment
of children with cancer was realized with the opening of The Tomorrow
Fund Clinic at Hasbro Childrens Hospital in October 1994.
The number of children with cancer treated at the hospital grew
by 40% in the year the clinic opened. Led by Dr. Edwin Forman, this
state of the art medical facility is widely recognized for its outstanding
medical care and its compassionate commitment to children and their
families.
In addition to contributing a major five-year grant to Hasbro Childrens
Hospital to name the Clinic, The Tomorrow Fund also provides ongoing
support to Clinic in many ways, including, but not limited to:
- Salary support for one full-time and two part-time pediatric
oncology Social Workers who meet with each child and family
as they face the emotional challenges that accompany the diagnosis
and treatment of childhood cancer
- Full salary for Parent Consultants compassionate
individuals who have had a child with cancer and who are on-site
in the Clinic and hospital to help families cope with everyday
stresses
- Salary support for a full-time Child Life Specialist
to plan, organize, and direct age-appropriate therapeutic play
to alleviate anxiety and stress associated with illness and hospitalization
- Full salary for a Clinic Play Lady who leads arts &
crafts projects with the children one day each week
- Full salary for a full-time Pediatric Oncology-Hematology Data
Management secretary
- Grant support to Museum on Rounds, to subsidize weekly
visits to The Tomorrow Fund Clinic and to fund enhancement of
the physical space through the creation of Clinic murals
- Grant support to the Rhode Island Hospital Department of
Psychiatry to provide psychotherapy for children, adolescents
and parents coping with childhood cancer
- Enhancements and renovations to the physical space
- Equipment, including a video camera for use with children,
a computer for the Data Management secretary, and exam room computers
for doctors to use when reviewing treatment and test results with
families
- Colorful band-aids and stickers for patients, arts & crafts
supplies, Clinic snacks, and other incidentals that help
to pass the time or ease the stress of Clinic visits
- Support for medical and psychosocial research in Hasbro Hospitals
Pediatric Oncology-Hematology Department
Today, more than 90% of the children with cancer in Rhode Island
and Southeastern Massachusetts are treated at The Tomorrow Fund
Clinic.
